FAQ

Why should I join?

  • Learn about Philippine culture – PDTO children and youth dancers receive the opportunity to meet with others in the Philippine community while learning about and performing the traditional dances live. Learning Filipino folk dances and music helps children and youth of Filipino heritage connect with their cultural heritage and instils pride in their cultural identity.
  • PDTO members receive the opportunity to work with others in the community and to expand their network (e.g. working with other multicultural groups in Ottawa or with organizers for international festivals)
  • Gain confidence – being part of a dance group helps to promote confidence and overcome shyness, fear and anxiety
  • Develop new skills – there are always new skills to learn on top of cultural dances, such as leadership skills, self-discipline, teamwork, organization and event management skills
  • Provide goals – youth receive the opportunity to work towards a final goal of performing all the dances they learned during community events and/or end of year showcases/presentations.
  • Dancing contributes to a healthy lifestyle – there are many benefits to dancing, including increased energy and endurance, improved flexibility and coordination, minimized stress and improved mental health.
  • Parents/guardians get involved in their children’s activities and in the organization of any fundraising performances
